Call for BCPRC Society Board nominations 2025

Deadline to apply: Friday, September 12, 2025, 11:59 pm PT.
2-year Term to begin at our Annual General Meeting in October 2025.

What is the BC PRC Board?

The BC Poverty Reduction Coalition Society is a provincially incorporated non-profit organization. After 10+ years of operating as a project hosted by the Vancity Community Foundation, we incorporated as a non-profit in 2021 to manage and govern our work. The Board of Directors is a key body providing legal oversight and strategic guidance for the Society. The board roles are volunteer, unpaid positions.

The BC PRC’s Board of Directors is made up of individuals from the BC PRC’s two main constituencies – the BC PRC Coalition Network (the coalition of organizations that come together to strategize and undertake policy advocacy) and the Community Action Network (or CAN, which is made up by folks with lived experience of poverty who have completed the BC PRC’s CAN leadership training program).

The Board’s main jobs are to:

  • Oversee the BC PRC’s budget/finances, support fundraising efforts, and ensure the organization complies with relevant laws.

  • Ensure the BC PRC’s programs/activities align with its aims and values and are financially sound.

  • Hire and support the Provincial Director and work with them to ensure a positive and respectful workplace for all employees.

  • Recruit and appoint new Board members.

  • Navigate organizational tensions or challenges if/as they arise.

  • Oversee governance and support strategic, values-aligned goals for the organization.

The Board is a governance Board that ensures the overall health of the BC PRC. Board members do not undertake or direct the operational/day-to-day work of the PRC.

What is the time commitment?

Currently, the Board meets monthly for approximately 1.5 hours on Zoom, and Board members take on different tasks/roles in between meetings depending on their skills, backgrounds, and interests. Board terms are two years, with the possibility of renewal.

We are looking for board members who commit to attending meetings regularly and helping out with shared governance work over a 2-year term. Board meetings are scheduled based on Board members’ availability and are currently held virtually in the late afternoon or early evening on weekdays. We are particularly looking for people with fundraising and funder experience, with experience mobilizing networks, and with government relations experience.

How are Board members elected?

If you participate in the BC PRC representing a member organization, or if you are a member of the CAN network, you can self-nominate to be on the Board.

If you are interested (or have questions), please email Rowan Burdge (rowan@bcpovertyreduction.ca) by Sep 12th. In your message, please include why you are interested in being a BC PRC Board Member and what skills and experience you will bring to the role (a cover letter and/or resume is not required). The Board will then meet with each person who self-nominates to learn more about their interest in joining and will elect new members at the AGM in October 2025.

All board members are provided with orientation and access to board governance training once appointed, and the BC Poverty Reduction Coalition covers officer and liability insurance.. You do not need previous experience on a non-profit board to self-nominate, and if you have questions about what’s involved, please don’t hesitate to ask. There are currently three vacancies available.
